A Corvette Stingray Story

HINGHAM, Mass.- When an updated model of a high-performance vehicle is released it captures everyones attention, but sometimes it is the experience that makes it that much more impressive. And that's exactly the case with the latest Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. With so much anticipation and excitement of the new 7th generation Corvette over the past year, and then the rollout in January, wishful thinking, maybe someday I'd have one, never expecting it would this soon. When Jim M. took me in his two week old beautiful 2013 velocity yellow 427 I started getting the urge to upgrade, followed by a second trip with Jim G. and Joe O. As soon as we parked, in pouring rain, we looked at six right-off-the-truck C7's. In the showroom, a new arctic white C7 was parked beside my favorite C6 60th Anniversary 427, and did they POP. The following weekend sitting in another 60th anniversary at a C7 unveiling day, I truly fell in love. A few minutes later the beauty was bought. Before it was bought, I was offered a fantastic trade in for that car but hesitated. The next few weeks I realized a window of opportunity was open on taking advantage of a possible good trade now vs. my car slipping in value by the spring and knowing it was almost time for new tires. I truly loved my LeMans blue C6 except for one issue, the very hard ride of the Z51 package; the car has been completely trouble free with only 18.5K miles.

Alan sent me the link of this white coupe stating it was scheduled to arrive at Best Chevrolet, knowing my passion for a white Stringray. Three weeks later Best informed me it finally arrived. When looking at the wrapped beauty, I loved the Arctic white, 2LT, adrenaline red, NPP and red calipers. Questionable options were the 7 speed manual, machine faced wheels and navigation. I was quoted a very good and fair trade in value for my C6 but decided to check out the local C7 inventory and/or place an order for a '14. During the next week I visited three other dealers, one very competitive, one somewhat, and the third was outright rude. Joe informed me he just had the same experience also buying his C6 there; we sure won't give them any more business.

I called Best to place a possible order only to be told it would be for a 2015 since they only had allocation for four 2014, all sold and the arictic white was an unplanned extra sent by Chevrolet management. The next day I took Carole "to only take a look." We walked into the showroom and WOW, there it was and did it POP! With two other couples looking like they were ready to buy, after sitting in the car for twenty minutes I got the nod from Carole and a deal was made!! :)

I can't give enough praise for Scott the owner, Bruce the sales manager, my sales rep Jess, Ivan the Corvette tech and all the staff; defintly the best car purchase experience I've ever had. The entire staff has, or will soon, attend the Disney University in Orlando and it sure is noticeable.

Riding home was a challenge since it was the first time driving a manual since my 1970 Corvette and 1969 Mach 1 over 40 years ago. I was pleasantly surprised how fast it came back, like riding a bike. Instantly we both realized the unbelievable difference from my Z51 C6: ride, steering, acceleration, interior and handling greatly improved.

The technology and workmanship of the C7 is far better than my 2007. I've spent hours playing with all the features, settings, etc. Phil was able to pair my iPhone and Pandora wirelessly to the car. I was concerned of no CD player in the C7, but with Pandora it's not an issue now. Found out the NPP system can be turned off, which makes the car very quiet; no need for a switch or fob. The seats are extremely comfortable, steering wheel smaller but much nicer, removable top slightly large but a lot lighter, seating space is slightly less with hatch space about the same, one storage space on rear left with battery tucked away on rear right with a battery tender plug in.

I've put on approx. 300 miles the first week and already feel very comfortable driving and bonding with this beast. The Certificate of Origin didn't arrive with the car. I checked the vin number sequence on the Corvette forum and noticed my car had four zeros in front of the 536 (manufacture number) instead of a one followed by three zeros. Alan referred me to Joe F. who did some investigation to find out that there were three pre-manufactured sequences before manufactured cars were sent to dealerships. The first two sequences were destroyed and 550 third sequence cars were built and sent to Detroit for shows, demonstrations and company executives etc. The first car built for dealerships was number 551. The only option I've ordered from Best is a white Z51 spoiler which is mounted over the present base black spoiler.

What unbelievable changes from the '74 to the '14 Stingrays, however looking out over the hood they feel very similar and both a blast to drive in their own way.

Chevrolet Corvette Z07 Spy Shots

HINGHAM, Mass.- Many renderings of a seventh-generation Corvette Z06/Z07 have made their way to the web and while the high-performance 'Vette has not yet been confirmed, some recent Chevrolet Corvette Z07 Spy Shots give us a look at what's to come!

Various styling upgrades have been rumored, but the Chevrolet Corvette Z07 Spy Shots reveals a bit more detail. As you can see, high-performance tires house a new set of multi-spoke wheels which are fitted to the vehicle. Although camouflage covers most of the vehicle, you can tell that the prototype has a more pronounced hood bulge and extra vents.

While details have not yet been confirmed, a 6.2-liter V8 engine is expected to deliver 600-650 HP! The Corvette Z07 is also expected to be equipped with Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes, a track-prepped suspension, and Tremec TR-6070 seven-speed manual gearbox.

Another mystery also lies in the Corvette's name. Many expect the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette to drop the Z06 name in favor of the Z07 name. Only time will tell, and we may know sooner rather than later. It's rumored that the Corvette Z07 may make its debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and is scheduled to arrive by 2016!

The Ford Atlas Concept Is The 2015 F-150

If you woke up from a bender in Ford's press event this morning, you'd have seen a large scaffold full of buff men in construction outfits spraying showers of welding sparks and pounding large hammers into girders with rippling muscles glistening with sweat. And, based on this and the loud, blaring industrial music, you'd probably think you were in a gay dance club. But you'd likely realize you were wrong when the large truck was lowered from the ceiling and then mobbed by men far too poorly dressed and out of shape to ever be in such a club.P

The truck was the Atlas, Ford's new concept for the future of the F-150.P

While it's a concept truck with more than its share of opulent concept car indulgences, it's also very clearly still an F-150. All the usual F-150 styling cues are there, only more so. There's the trademark beltline drop and kink, the proportions still retain the F-150 bulldog-beefiness, the taillight treatment fits the same basic profile even if they're now the rounded-rect shape that's infected pretty much nearly every taillight today.P

The front end's styling is the most dramatically different, though still clearly F-150 based. I find the front grille a bit baroque and fussy, with a number of intersecting bars and openings and slots of varying weights and thicknesses. The headlights are show-car extravagances, LED units with blue glowing piping.P

The concept is built on the F-150 platform, and retains the general dimensions, though it is a bit wider, and Ford said it'll be powered by a "next-generation" EcoBoost engine. The real changes body-wise, however, are in active aerodynamic features. The grille features adjustable shutters that would open when more cooling is required (idling in traffic on a hot day) and close for aerodynamic improvements for, say, highway cruising.P

There's also a dynamic chin spoiler/front air dam to help with aerodynamics, and each wheel has a set of active, spring-loaded shutters that can close to improve aero performance at speed. I felt these with my hand, and based on the hard duty and environment these trucks will likely face, it's hard to picture them staying intact long. But this is just a show car, so I imagine they'll figure it out.P

There's a number of other interesting features designed based on the kinds of work these trucks tend to do. There's a very nice little inverted-U-shaped hydraulic frame that raises out of the tailgate to assist in managing long cargo. If you've ever tried to haul a dozen 12' 2x4s you can imagine how handy something like this could be. Though they didn't mention it, with this thing extended and the tailgate down, you could drag an idiot/friend on roller skates for an excitingly pants-soiling asphalt-skiing session.P

Most tantalizing and least explained was a trailer backup assist system. As someone who's blocked traffic horribly backing up trailers, this is very exciting.P

The interior is full of leather and screens and some very clever removable aluminum-and-rubber floor mat tray things — possibly representing the pinnacle of floor mat technology. Also, the roof features an integrated cargo area/rack system for oversize bed cargo tie-downs or smaller item storage. All these features combine into a well-thought-out truck concept.P

I talked to Ford Design Head J Mays about the truck and the word he kept saying about it was "intelligent." That word choice reflects a bit of defensiveness to the perceived lo-brow nature of full-sized trucks. If the "intelligence" takes the form of useful tools like they hinted at here, that'd be great, and not the awful attempt to move a truck higher up the brow that was J Mays' old Lincoln Blackwood.P

Even though I was really, really hoping for a small or even mid-sized truck (J Mays told me, basically, not a chance) this does seem a rationally-thought out concept. Hopefully the clever bits will make it to production, and not just the overdone grille and fancier interior.

With the North American International Auto Show full of new cars and concepts, some of the best moments include the unveiling of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, big reveals in the American luxury market from Cadillac and Lincoln, as well as the Shelby Focus ST.

The North American International Auto Show, the annual fest in the hub of the US motoring industry, was full of new life this year.

Manufacturers rolled out some impressive new models, and reinvigorated old ones, hoping to battle for better position in the revived US market and the booming Chinese one.

Much of the action was in the luxury segment, as car builders vie for the high margins they can earn from well-paid Americans and China's nouveau riche.

Here are the show's highlights:

-- CORVETTE: The all-new Corvette, branded the Stingray to evoke the 1963 model, but with styling that evokes Italian supercars while still retaining a bit -- see the back end -- of the Chevrolet identity. At first glance it was not so different from the Ferrari F12 sitting a few steps away, its own design accommodating a few American muscle car lines. The test will be on the track: the Corvette sports 450 horsepower and carbon fiber based weight reductions, and the base model hits 100 kilometers an hour (60 miles per hour) in four seconds flat.

"This car is the reason I work at GM," General Motors executive Mark Reuss said.

-- BMW: The German titan introduced a spanking new 4-series coupe, an aggressive, low-lying sports car longer and wider than the 3-series. Still in concept mode, it doesn't look far from being ready to roll.

-- AMERICAN LUXURY: GM's Cadillac Division and Ford's Lincoln should be doing well, given the strength of sales of Europe's luxury car makers. But they have been slipping, and both pushed to reverse that with new premium vehicles. Lincoln showed its MKC compact crossover concept, targetting Mercedes-Benz's GLK350 and the Audi Q5. Cadillac introduced its fuel efficient hybrid coupe, the ELR, with a 300 mile (480 km) range on one charge. Cadillac rang up a victory when its ATS sedan, launched last year, garnered North American Car of the Year honors in Detroit.

-- TRUCKS: Chrysler's beefy Ram 1500 won the honors of North American truck of the year at the show, but Ford garnered more attention with its Atlas concept pickup, featuring snazzy new electronics for guiding the driver in tight situations and energy-saving wheel hub louvers, among other innovations. Meanwhile GM introduced an all-new Silverado, also with new fuel efficiency measures including a variable displacement engine, that could steal a march on the market-dominant F-150 as Ford fans wait for the Atlas' new tricks to make it to the market.

The 2014 R8 is offered with three different engine variants: the R8 V8, the R8 V10 and the R8 V10 Plus. The 2014 R8 is now more dynamic and powerful than ever before thanks to numerous improvements, including a newly developed seven-speed S tronic transmission that helped improve the 0-60 mph time by 0.3 seconds on the R8 V10 Plus. At the top of the range is the new R8 V10 Plus with 550 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque. Equipped with the S tronic, it catapults from zero to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 196 mph. It weighs approximately 100 lbs. less than the R8 V10 due to utilizing carbon fiber side blades, front splitter, rear diffuser, spoiler; a smaller fuel tank; manual Alcantara seats and ceramic brakes.

The RS 5 Cabriolet shares the same look and specifications as the RS 5 Coupe, though it offers the open top experience. The four-seat convertible with a cloth soft top entices with a unique combination of elegance and power. The highly successful RS 5 coupe extends its model series with the addition of this high-end soft-top, which entices with a unique combination of prestige and power. With nearly identical performance numbers as the coupe, the RS 5 Cabriolet is powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 engine with FSI direct injection. Its 4.2 liter engine outputs 450 horsepower at 8,250 rpm and produces a maximum torque of 317 lb.-ft. between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. With a curb weight of 4,420 lbs., the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet launches from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The car’s top speed is limited to 174 mph; while at the same time having a class leading fuel economy* and no gas guzzler tax.

The exterior and interior of the Audi RS 5 Cabriolet retains the essence of the RS 5 Coupe. When the top is down it only requires 2.12 cu-ft. of its 13.42 cu-ft. trunk volume. The split rear seatbacks can be folded over individually, and a load-through hatch from the trunk to the rear seating area improves ease of access functionality. Special reinforcements contribute to the convertible body’s high rigidity, and aluminum front fenders compensate for some of the added weight of the reinforcements.

The new LED light strips illuminate the headlights and taillights without any conventional incandescent lamps. Like the lights, the rear bumper was also redesigned; its diffuser is now much higher, and a honeycomb screen insert encloses the two large elliptical tailpipes of the exhaust system. On the trunk lid there is a subtle matte carbon spoiler lip for additional downforce.

The sport seats have power adjustments, high side panels for optimal lateral support, integrated head restraints, a lumbar support and a pull-out thigh support. They are upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara or in the optional black or lunar silver Fine Nappa leather. All leather types are pigmented to reduce heating by sunlight. At the press of a button, the soft top opens and closes automatically in 15 seconds and 17 seconds respectively – even when driving at speeds of up to 30 mph. On hot summer days when the top is down, drivers can select the optional climate-controlled seats for added comfort.

Detroit Auto Show: 2014 Kia Cadenza

Kia has unveiled the 2014 Kia Cadenza at the Detroit motor show. It was designed under the watch of Kia president and design chief Peter Schreyer. It features Kia's so-called "tiger-nose" front fascia, LED lights and chrome bezeling in the back.

Power comes from a 293-horsepower, 3.3-liter V-6 engine that features direct-injection technology for improved performance. The engine drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission that incorporates shift paddles on the steering wheel for driver-initiated gear changes.

Inside, there's a whole host of nice leather surrounded by wood and chrome accents, with a driver-focused cockpit (sort of like the Optima) with a seven-inch TFT color touchscreen display. Premium options include things like Nappa leather seats, a panoramic sunroof, Kia's UVO infotainment system, HID headlamps with active lighting, heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Sounds comfy.
