Winter Weather Safe Driving Tips:
1. Take It Slow. Everything takes longer when driving on snow-covered pavement than it does on dry pavement so you give yourself extra time to maneuver when you drive slowly in the winter.
2. Again, Take It Slow. Accelerating and decelerating slowly is the best way to regain traction and avoid skids. Plus, it takes longer to slow down on on snow-covered roads.
3. Leave More Space. Increasing your following distance from the car in front of you to 8-10 seconds, rather than just 3-4 seconds, will give you the extra time needed should you have to stop.
4. Know Your Brakes. The best method to stop in snowy or icy conditions is threshold braking. Just keep the heel of your foot on the floor and apply firm, steady pressure to the brake.
5. Don't Speed Up Hills. When driving up hills in the winter, avoid applying extra gas which will make your wheels spin. The best way to approach a hill is to try to get some inertia before reaching the hill, and allow that to carry you up. Then proceed down hill as slowly as possible.
6. Don't Stop On A Hill. While driving up a hill, avoid stopping since trying to get going while on an icy incline can be difficult.
